A label-promoter that wouldn’t exist without its community

O que é? What is it?

ENG_ MERA is a label because it releases music and a promoter because it presents those same editions to the public. Created by João Soares, Daniel Assunção and Nelson Duarte from the independent cultural circuit of Oporto, the original idea of MERA is to “record the material of everything and everyone” that surrounds them. Basically, “to show what is done in the area”, João Soares tells us.

Como surgiu? How did it come up?

ENG_Created within the artistic community of Bonfim, the origin of MERA lies in the people that surround it. The “seed” that planted this project, notes João Soares, was Ócio, a collective of artists founded in 2013, of which João, Daniel and Nelson are members. Like animation studio Girina and arts magazine Dose (created by Maria Von Hafe, Margarida Oliveira, Cristiana Oliveira and Mariana Rebola), MERA is an offspring of Ócio and the various languages found in this collective. It started out as just a channel for sharing, but soon came the first editions of music from close friends, mostly within electronic music, followed by collaborations with venues like Passos Manuel club to showcase those same works.

What is the role of community for MERA?

ENG_Like Ócio, MERA results from the artistic community burst of Bonfim, one of the main meeting points of the creative force that drives the city. It was there that connections with artists, audiences, residents and other collectives, such as Berru or Lovers & Lollypops, took place, and this community spirit and mutual help became rooted in the label’s ethos, “as if it were destiny”. João Soares underlines that working together was something that they could do from the beginning, since everything happens “in a very natural and honest way”: either through casual meetings at Asa de Mosca, the historic café in Oporto located opposite Ócio’s work space and gallery, or through the work developed here. But the bridges created are not limited to Porto – MERA’s tentacles extend to Amsterdam, Berlin and Aachen, where online exchanges are emerging with similar artists and collectives.
During the confinements, they tried to replicate the in-person dynamics in the virtual space and again the work took place in an organic way. The ease with which they chose and involved artists and publishers in the two editions of the Domestic Rave Transmission, a 24-hour livestream event, was, as João puts it, “further proof that these communities exist and that it is important to preserve them”.

How important is it for MERA artists to showcase their work live?

ENG_For MERA, the editing is just as important as the live performance. It matters to them to get “another response that isn’t just graphic or monetisation, that just tells you how many sales you’ve made or how many people have listened”, notes João. Live, they find a “very personal and honest response in people’s faces and bodies”, an interaction that encourages the artists to continue their work. Investing in creating an audiovisual and performative environment appropriated to each show, MERA seeks to stimulate a link between the spectator and the artist, something that the livestream will never be able to replace.
